voodoo2 Win me/98 driver with an awesome utility that also allows you to remove
any glide files on your system. Glide puts stuff everywhere and is the easiest
thing in the world to foul up. This utility makes it a snap. Just download it,
double click the file and extract it somewhere easy to find like C:/windows/voodoo2 (don't even need a
voodoo card to do that part) then when you install the card and reboot it will
ask you to install the voodoo or windows disk, IGNORE that and point it to that
folder. EACH AND EVERY TIME, point it to that folder until the install is done.
Here's the nuts and bolts, more than you ever wanted to know
about 3dfx's voodoo2 chipset, you asked for it! 3DFX makes the Voodoo video
Chipset that glide runs on. They released the rights to several companies to
make the cards. nVidia bought out 3dfx and the voodoo cards have been taken off
the retail store shelves for the last 1-2 years. You can still get them used
from places like ebay. (anywhere from $15 to $30 +S&H, depends on what you are
willing to pay) There are 4mb, 8mb and 12mb voodoo 2's (they are pci cards only
and need another vidio card with 2d capability to run). Not much performance
diff between the 8 and 12mb cards, don't waste your time with the 4mb card.
PLEASE UNDERSTAND, voodoo2 was only a 3d card. It has to be connected to another
video card with 2d capability to work. For example, I have mine connected to a
32mb AGP nVidia GForce2. I have a friend that is successfully running a
voodoo3 2000 (Banshee) with a voodoo2 however I'd stay away from running this
with any of the newer voodoo cards. While you are looking for the card, make
sure it comes with a pass through cable, this cable is connected externally to
your existing video card, this part is hard to foul up! BUT IT MUST BE
CONNECTED BY EXTERNAL CABLE TO YOUR OTHER VIDEO CARD. There is also the
capability to do what is called SLI, you need to have two voodoo2 cards (the
same manufacturer and size of ram are required for error free sli) plus the 2d
capable video card for this to happen, this time on top of connecting the main
vid card to the first voodoo on the outside of the case you will now use a very
small cable on the inside of the case to connect just the two voodoo 2's then
plug the monitor to the lowest voodoo. THIS IS A HUGE PERFORMANCE BOOST AND
ABOUT THE FASTEST OF ALL VOODOO CONFIGURATIONS TO DATE and since you still have
your other screaming video card installed you get great direct 3d performance
when needed elsewhere. Don't worry about the driver disk because that's garbage
anyway, throw that driver disk in the trash as soon as it gets to you so you
aren't tempted to install it, use the link up top to get your driver with
utility. By the way, if you find a card for a good price and don't get the cable
with it you can go to your nearest computer store/radio shack and get a standard
monitor extension, the shorter the better (new ones were about 6 inches) and
you'll be in business. Finding an sli cable will be more tricky. You can ask
around I have a few but I won't be home till June. 12 Jan 2002
